Introduction
For municipal contractors and government procurement teams across Southeast Asia, rural road lighting has long been a high-cost, low-efficiency challenge. Remote villages often lack grid access, traditional wired street lights require expensive cable construction, and rising electricity budgets put constant pressure on local authorities.
In 2025, a provincial municipal department in northeastern Thailand launched a rural road renovation project, aiming to replace all old high-pressure sodium lamps with maintenance-free off-grid solar lighting. After a 3-month bidding and evaluation process, our solar lighting solution was selected for its climate-adaptive design and stable long-cycle performance.
This case study breaks down the full project flow – from initial demand and technical challenges to final configuration, on-site installation and 6-month verified operating data – to help engineering teams reference similar off-grid solar street light deployments.

Project Background: Why Thailand Turned to Solar Street Lights for Rural Renovation
Northeastern Thailand has a large number of scattered natural villages, most of which are located outside the coverage of the municipal power grid. Before the renovation, village roads used a small number of traditional wired street lamps in densely populated areas, while most branch roads had no lighting at all, bringing hidden travel safety risks to local residents.
The local municipal department put forward three core requirements for this renovation project:
- Full off-grid operation, no need to lay long-distance power cables to reduce construction costs
- Stable lighting performance during the 4–5 month monsoon rainy season
- Low post-maintenance workload to reduce long-term operating expenditure
According to Thailand’s Ministry of Energy, rural solar photovoltaic popularization is a key part of the country’s 2030 renewable energy development plan, which further promoted the local authority to choose solar street lighting as the final renovation plan.
Core Challenges Faced by the Local Municipal Team
After our on-site survey, we summarized three major technical challenges that needed to be solved in this project:
- Insufficient sunshine in rainy seasons: The project area has continuous cloudy and rainy days from June to October, which requires the battery to support at least 3–5 days of autonomous lighting without charging.
- High temperature and high humidity corrosion: Long-term high temperature and humid tropical climate accelerate the aging of lamp shells and circuit boards, requiring higher waterproof and anti-corrosion grades.
- Uneven road distribution: Villages are scattered and road widths vary, which requires customized lighting layout instead of a one-size-fits-all uniform configuration.
Custom Solar Lighting Solution Designed for Thailand’s Climate
Combined with local climate characteristics and road lighting standards, we finally adopted a customized split solar street light solution for the whole project. Compared with all-in-one models, split structure allows larger battery capacity and adjustable solar panel angle, which is more suitable for high-rainfall off-grid municipal projects.

Climate-Adaptive Design Adjustments
To adapt to Thailand’s special tropical monsoon climate, we made three targeted optimizations based on standard products:
- Added anti-thunder and surge protection module to reduce damage caused by frequent thunderstorms in rainy seasons
- Upgraded the battery high-temperature protection program to ensure stable charging and discharging under 45°C high temperature environment
- Adopted stainless steel mounting brackets to avoid rust and corrosion caused by long-term high humidity in rural areas
This set of configuration also fully complies with CE and RoHS export certification requirements, which helped the client complete customs clearance and project filing smoothly.
Full Project Execution: From Design to On-Site Installation
Following our standard OEM/ODM project customization flow, the whole project was completed in 4 stages with clear schedule nodes, which ensured delivery and acceptance on schedule.
Step 1: Site Survey & Lighting Layout Design
Our technical team completed a 5-day on-site survey together with the local contractor, measured road length, width and night pedestrian flow, and divided roads into three grades: main village roads, branch roads and public activity areas. We then provided a complete lighting layout drawing with 126 lamp positions and corresponding power configuration schemes.
For engineering contractors bidding for similar government projects, we can provide free layout design and parameter matching services to help you improve bidding scheme competitiveness. You can find more service details on our municipal solar lighting solutions page.
Step 2: Sample Testing & Batch Production
Before mass production, we first provided 5 sets of pre-production samples for the client to conduct on-site testing. After 2 weeks of continuous lighting test and rainy day simulation test, the client confirmed that all parameters met the project requirements, and then officially placed the batch order.
According to the agreed production cycle, we completed the production and quality inspection of 126 sets of lamps within 12 working days, and arranged container delivery after the client’s third-party QC inspection.
Step 3: Remote Installation Guidance & Commissioning
Since the local contractor had rich street lamp installation experience, we provided detailed installation manuals and online remote guidance services. The whole installation work was completed in 18 days by 4 local construction teams. After installation, we guided the contractor to complete the unified debugging of lighting mode, brightness and induction parameters.

Post-Installation Results & Verified Performance Data
After 6 months of formal operation, the client provided us with complete operation data and acceptance report. The overall performance of the project exceeded the initial expected indicators.
Actual Energy Saving & Operating Cost Data
Compared with the original traditional high-pressure sodium lamp scheme used in the pilot section, the actual operating data after renovation is as follows:
- Annual electricity cost saving: 100% zero electricity bill for off-grid operation, saving about 72% of comprehensive annual cost compared with wired street lamps (including electricity fee and line maintenance fee)
- Lighting coverage: Single lamp covers 7–8 meters of road width, meeting local municipal road lighting brightness standards
- Annual maintenance cost: Reduced by more than 65%, no line maintenance work required, only regular appearance cleaning and annual battery status inspection
For large-scale municipal projects, this cost reduction effect becomes more significant as the number of lamps increases.
Stability Performance in Rainy & Monsoon Seasons
The most concerned rainy season stability test also achieved expected results. During the 28 consecutive cloudy and rainy days from mid-July to mid-August, all lamps maintained normal full-night lighting without power failure, and the battery remaining power was still above 30% at the end of the rainy period, which fully verified the reliability of the energy storage configuration.

Client Feedback & Project Acceptance Result
The project successfully passed the final acceptance of the local municipal department in the fourth quarter of 2025. The person in charge of the project gave the following feedback:
“We have tried other solar lighting products before, but most of them had insufficient battery life in rainy seasons. This customized solution perfectly solves the pain points of our local climate. The installation process was smooth, and the 6-month operation data is far better than expected. We have included this supplier as a designated cooperative brand for next year’s second-phase village renovation project.”
At present, the client has confirmed the cooperation intention of the second-phase 200 sets of solar street light renovation plan, and we are carrying out targeted parameter adjustment according to the road conditions of the new villages.
Key Takeaways for Engineering Contractors & Municipal Buyers
For contractors and procurement teams preparing similar rural or municipal solar lighting projects, we summarize three core reference experiences based on this Thailand project:
- Climate adaptation comes first
Do not blindly choose low-power general models. Products must be adjusted according to local annual sunshine duration, rainy season length and temperature range, otherwise the later failure rate will increase significantly. - Professional layout design saves cost
Reasonable lamp position arrangement and power matching can reduce 15–20% of total project cost on the premise of meeting lighting standards. - Choose factories with project experience
Suppliers with actual overseas municipal project experience can better avoid various on-site problems and provide more targeted after-sales support.
